The John Schofield Trust works to help more people from diverse backgrounds succeed in the UK news industry so that journalists with potential can overcome any lack of connections. We want to build on our proven track record by boosting our offering to people not based in the south-east.

People from marginalised backgrounds based outside of the south-east find it hard to secure work in newsrooms. They face barriers to enter journalism because of structural disadvantage – economic, social or otherwise. This means that the news industry is unrepresentative of the UK population. As a result, the industry poorly serves the needs of democracy and civic debate, because news programmes made by a small proportion of the population do not give a full picture of our society.

The Trust is an experienced and highly effective charity delivering career enhancing training to early career journalists and university students. We wish to hold more regional in-person networking events, masterclasses and workshops so we can support our participants with soft skills, networking opportunities and newsroom visits. We are highly respected in the UK news industry for targeting disadvantaged young journalists and supporting them in telling their stories.
