Situation
Child homelessness in Bolivia has one fundamental cause - poverty. Often the first violence children encounter is in their own homes or on the street where they sell sweets and clean windscreens to contribute to their family’s survival. The children who live on the streets and in the drainage canals of Santa Cruz are subject to ongoing hopelessness, violence and abuse. School is not an option for these children.
Solution
Over the past 33 years we have learned that if a child, no matter how young, will stay with us for at least one year they never go back to the streets again. The successful completion of their education enables them to reintegrate into the local community as a productive, healthy adult – a new member of Bolivia’s growing middle class. There is no better gift than the gift of education!
