Postpartum psychosis (PP) is a severe mental illness that affects 1-2 in every 1000 women after giving birth, with many describing PP as the most distressing & frightening experience of their lives. As well as the medical & emotional impact, some women also experience legal & rights based problems.

As well as medical and emotional issues, women and families often face several other difficulties as a consequence of PP. Women report needing specialist help with legal and rights-based issues, including benefits entitlements, maternal rights, accessing insurance, money advice, the return of their driving licence following recovery, to name but a few. This can compound an already very stressful situation. No such bespoke PP-specific advice is currently available.

We'd like to develop a series of information leaflets on navigating the most commonly experienced issues. Longer term, we'd like to offer a support and signposting service with information around these specific issues. This would be beneficial in building resilience for women & would ensure that APP remains a relevant source of support to women and families long after they recover, building our community and helping us be there for women for life.
