Situation
Most women giving birth at Great Western Hospital require continuous fetal heart rate monitoring (CTG). They have risk factors meaning they are not suitable for home birth or mid-wife lead delivery. Currently our monitors connect to the mother via wires. This limits the mobility required to be comfortable and limits birthing choices. The wires restrict the mother to labour on beds instead of being upright and mobile, increasing the likelihood of an instrumental birth or caesarean section.
Solution
Evidence suggests that mobility during labour brings the benefit of shorter labours, less severe pain and less intervention. So, we wish to offer a Mobile Telemetry CTG Monitor to women giving birth. This wireless fetal heart rate monitor enables women to walk around freely, use a birthing ball and is waterproof allowing use of the birthing pool for pain relief, improving patient choice and experience. Clinicians can see all vital information on the base station needed to keep mum and baby safe.
