The unrest in Ethiopia means we are no longer able to reach students in rural schools with our donkey libraries. This project will establish corner libraries in rural schools and provide teacher training so that students in affected areas continue to have access to books and reading sessions.

Situation
Our Donkey Libraries have been supporting schools without library access in rural areas for 10 years. The security situation means it is no longer safe to run the project. This means that students in areas already lacking resources are now missing vital support to improve literacy and reading for pleasure. A recent curriculum revision with a flawed rollout of new textbooks also means many schools are teaching without relevant curriculum resources, causing problems for learning in all subjects.
Solution
We will set up corner libraries in 15 rural schools. At each school we will provide corner library furniture, new curriculum textbooks and colourful local language children’s story books. These will support learning across all subjects as well as reading for pleasure. We will train directors and teachers in effective library management and facilitation of reading sessions so they have the skills to improve literacy and develop reading habits within the school.
