In an increasingly volatile context, activists face criminal gangs and corrupt governments. Constant threats to their lives, families, and communities, attacks, and criminalisation are a daily occurrence. Many of these activists, those most at risk, come from historically marginalised groups, such as women, Indigenous peoples, LGBTQ+, and often lack access to resources, further disadvantaging them in their fight to secure their human rights, the environment, and rule of law.

Peace Brigades International provides ‘holistic protective accompaniment’ to threatened activists in dangerous contexts. Our ‘unarmed bodyguards’ prevent attacks on environmental and human rights defenders. PBI also empowers brave activists through training in risk management, digital security and wellbeing. And we campaign alongside them for changes in policies and practices that help reduce abuses in the long-term. We keep human rights defenders safe and heard so they can make change.
