This Christmas we want to help create a more comfortable working environment for 5,400 students across 17 rural schools in southeast Madagascar. By building over 1,300 ergonomic desks and benches, we will both improve learning and increase classroom capacity, making education more accessible.

Situation
The Anosy Region of southeast Madagascar has a net school enrolment rate among primary-age children of just 54%, caused largely by a critically underfunded education system. Assessments we conducted at 17 rural schools found that students were often studying on the floor or sharing two-person benches between four students, impacting their ability to focus during class and exams, or sometimes attending school altogether.
Solution
SEED will conduct a seven-month construction project at 17 schools across rural Anosy. Improving the learning environment for 5,445 target students, SEED will construct and distribute 1,307 additional two-person student desk-benches so every student has an appropriate space to learn. While the project will grow classroom capacity and support future student population growth, SEED knows construction produces carbon emissions and will offset these through a community-managed tree planting site.
