Situation
All families at the shelter are very vulnerable and struggling to cope with not having a stable home for their children. As well as being homeless, they are also struggling with other complex issues such as mental health difficulties, post-natal depression, domestic violence, poverty, and loneliness. These issues and a lack of confidence and self-esteem mean these families are isolated and not engaging with each other or community services or regular family groups. Children are missing out.
Solution
We have been running family groups for 29 years so bring the skills and experience needed to help these families. Each nurturing group is 2 hours long and led by expert staff and trained volunteers. We build trust and encourage all families to join the sessions which are planned based on needs. Emotional support improves mental health and builds resilience to cope with their challenges. We help them access food and other essentials like nappies and milk. Children's fun activities bring joy.
