There is a nature-shaped hole in international criminal law. Currently, the most senior decision-makers —whether in corporations or government—face no criminal accountability when their actions lead to large-scale environmental destruction. Ecocide legislation seeks to establish a moral taboo around severe environmental harm, aiming to deter, prevent, and punish those responsible for causing the most significant damage to the natural world.

Following a formal proposal in September from Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa, ecocide is now officially on the table at the International Criminal Court! This is a pivotal step toward holding society's most powerful criminally accountable when their decisions lead to severe environmental harm, with transformative potential for the protection of biodiversity, climate stability, and human well-being.
