Situation
Preserving stitches for the future. 2020 International Council of Museums reported that 75% of the world's traditional embroidery techniques are at risk of disappearing due to “globalisation, mechanisation, war, population displacement and a decline in skilled artisans.” There is a lack of comprehensive resources and formal education amidst a growing demand for authenticity and craftsmanship. 2019 UNESCO defined embroidery as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of Urgent Safeguarding".
Solution
Since the industrial revolution, the RSN’s mission has been to ensure the future of hand embroidery. RSN Stitch Bank, the world directory of stitches, provides a single comprehensive platform that illustrates and explains stitching techniques from around the world, giving historic and contemporary examples of each stitch, its creation and its use. The free resource is available worldwide to everyone with access to the internet: archivists, researchers, teachers, students, experts and hobbyists.
