Situation
Few opportunities exist for young people where poverty is endemic with no external support or services, recreational areas or training opportunities to lift them out of poverty. Youth have low self-esteem and need support to develop skills for employment, good citizenship, & stay healthy so that they grow into responsible adults who give back to their communities. We provide a reassuring space for youth to gain vocational skills, build confidence, & well-being for a route out of poverty.
Solution
Trained youth peer educators are positive role models & mentors to at-risk youth delivering sessions in vocational skills & life skills to build confidence, self-belief, & promote good citizenship. They learn how to take responsibility for their health, avoid illicit behaviours & find friendship & guidance to help them develop. Many youth are orphans who need the guidance missing from parents & now provided by peer educators. Training supports a route into employment & provides mental well being
