The Congo Basin, the world’s second largest rainforest, is threatened by extractive industries & agricultural expansion. Projects like carbon offsetting can dispossess local communities & allow pollution elsewhere. They often lack transparency, prioritize vested interests, & ignore social & environmental standards. Weak governance & insecure land rights worsen these issues, causing long-term impacts on forests & communities, while policymakers fail to address the threats adequately.

RFUK counters these impacts at different levels. On the ground we equip frontline communities with simple but cutting-edge technologies to map, monitor and protect their forests. At the national and international levels, our high-impact research and campaigns – always rooted in our work with communities - tackle the structural causes of deforestation and offer practical, scalable alternatives for policymakers that put forest peoples at their heart.
