Shockingly England has lost over half of hedgerows since 1945! We want to restore our local network of hedgerows by working with local communities, schools, landowners and farmers to increase awareness of how important they are, manage existing hedgerows and create new ones.

Situation
It's time to reverse the trend of hedgerow loss as our hedgerow network (known as a linear forest) is our largest, most connected 'nature reserve.' Healthy hedgerows are teeming with life and crucial for nature. One in ten of all vulnerable species in the UK depend on hedgerows, including the hazel dormouse and the beloved hedgehog, whose decline is closely linked to hedgerow loss. Continued hedgerow loss will hasten the decline of these species.
Solution
CPRE The Countryside Charity has emphasized the crucial role hedgerows play in sustaining the natural world. It has campaigned to increase the hedgerow network in England by 40% by 2050, encouraging local branches to collaborate with communities, schools, landowners, and farmers to restore poorly managed hedgerows. This includes training in traditional hedge laying and planting new hedges to enhance the connectivity of the hedgerow network.
