Situation
The number of children with life limiting conditions in the West Midlands has increased by 56% over the past decade and is expected to continue growing. This has increased the demand for specialist care to help families cope with the challenges of their child’s complex needs. Research from Together for Short Lives in 2022 found the average nurse vacancy rate in children’s hospices has risen to 18.6% compared to 12.2% in 2019, with a lack of trained professionals a significant factor in this rise
Solution
We provide specialist palliative nursing care and respite stays for children with life-limiting conditions and their families 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each visit is centred around a range of fun and therapeutic activities with everything from arts and crafts sessions to hydrotherapy, and completely tailored to each child. At the end of life stage we do everything we can to make this unthinkable time as bearable as we can and give families the chance to say goodbye.
