Situation
Despite efforts towards universal enrolment, the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023 revealed that 38.3% of women aged 17-18 in Gujarat and 46% in Chhattisgarh are not attending school. Students that drop out of school before gaining their high school diploma face challenges in returning to the education system due to a lack of awareness and support. As a result of this, the women in these communities are unable to access higher education or enter skilled career paths.
Solution
Pratham's Second Chance Programme prepares and supports students to take the Grade 10, secondary education examinations. The programme runs in two phases. The first phase is called the 'Foundation Course' which lasts for 3-4 months and focuses on basic foundational concepts of subjects such as their local language, maths and science. After the Foundation Course, students move to the 'Main Course' which helps them prepare for the Board-mandated curriculum and ends with students taking the exam.
