School Food Matters wants every child to get growing! Gardening brings great health benefits, but how do children and their teachers develop the skills required? Our Garden Gurus programme will provide 10 schools with a year of support, from seed sowing to plant care, onto harvesting tasty crops.

Many children in England do not have the opportunity to learn where their food comes from or to grow fruit and vegetables. Schools are stretched delivering a packed curriculum and have little time or budget to commit to extra-curricular activities. For schools located in areas of high deprivation, the problem is even greater, with children having limited access to green space at home. As a result, children are disconnected from their natural environment and their mental health is deteriorating.
School Food Matters will help 10 primary schools in England to develop food-growing gardens. We will support them through a complete academic year to teach children where food comes from and equip them with the skills to grow fruit and vegetables themselves. This hands-on support from our team of school gardeners will enable teachers who currently lack knowledge and assurance, to gain the confidence required to lead a school gardening programme on their own.
