There are over 87,000 people in prison, an increase of over 5,000 since the start of 2023. 47% of adults in prison have no qualifications. Acute shortages in prison staff means people are locked in their cells for long periods of time, limiting access to purposeful activity and having a negative impact on mental health and wellbeing. The education provided by prisons tends to focus on basic literacy and numeracy, with few opportunities for academic progression.

PET helps individuals and the overstretched prison system. We offer 130 different distance learning courses, giving people the chance to learn subjects which support their future goals. We also give advice to help people understand their options. Our courses provide a positive activity that people can do during the increased amount of time in their cells. Providing more courses and extending our reach will help us to achieve our mission of every prisoner a learner, every prison a place to learn.
