Situation
Baringo County, a largely rural and semi-arid region, relies heavily on agriculture. Over half of its 670,000 residents live in poverty, with young people and female-headed households being the most affected. Low agricultural productivity has resulted in frequent food and nutrition insecurity, and high rates of stunting among children. Smallholder farmers lack access to drought-tolerant seeds, as well as the training and support necessary to ensure high yields.
Solution
Six farmer groups will be provided with drought-tolerant seeds and seedlings, and Farmer Field Schools will be used to spread best practice, resulting in strong yields and a reduction of post-harvest losses. 31 x Mother2Mother Support Groups will receive training around the first 1,000 days of breastfeeding, dietary diversity, and poultry rearing for income and improved nutrition. Cone shaped kitchen gardens will be provided to enhance food security, even in periods of low rainfall.
