Since 2015 the number of people seeking sanctuary in Edinburgh has grown exponentially due to war, persecution and natural disaster. This has included Syrians, Afghans, Ukrainians, and many others. As refugees and asylum seekers (New Scots) adjust to life in Edinburgh they face many long- and short-term challenges. It is difficult to access English classes, to connect meaningfully with local people, and to navigate cultural norms. The barrier-breaking work of Salaam is needed now more than ever.

Salaam supports New Scots through our one-to-one Befriending Programme, Peaced Together Craft Groups, English Conversation Cafés, and a Christmas Hamper Appeal. We facilitate welcome, connection, and integration, while inspiring, equipping and building capacity in our local community to come alongside New Scots. When our New Scot friends and neighbours are shown compassion and solidarity we believe that the whole community flourishes.
