As part of our year long step up for wildlife appeal, we're raising money to help our region's red squirrels thrive once more in one of their last remaining strongholds in the UK. LWT's red squirrel project desperately needs funding to ensure they can deliver the work that this species needs.

Situation
The red squirrel population in our region plummeted in 2008 due to a devastating squirrel pox outbreak. Although they almost recovered to their pre-pox numbers, bi-annual monitoring shows they are now decreasing year by year. The main threat to this shy and humble species continues to be the invasive grey squirrel who are carriers of the pox virus and competitively exclude reds from their natural habitat. Other threats include predation by domestic pets, roadkill and devastating habitat loss.
Solution
Each day that passes is a struggle, and a fight just to survive for our red squirrels. Thanks to the perseverance and dedication of our volunteers and project officers, the threats to our red squirrel population are being slowly reduced. However, this is far from where we would like to be as far as helping this species not only survive, but thrive. Your donation can help us do so much more work so that this elusive mammal stands a chance at regaining it's stronghold in Lancashire and Merseyside.
