Over 80% of rural Malawians rely on water from community waterpoints, 40% of which are broken at any given time, leaving thousands of families without nearby access to safe water and thousands of women and girls forced to walk miles to collect water, instead of going to school, or working. Most broken waterpoints are easily repairable; however few rural communities have the money to buy the necessary parts and even fewer pump mechanics are able to repair their waterpoint for free.

Pump Aid has been supporting pump mechanics to offer communities service agreements to ensure their waterpoints are regularly serviced and their functionality is maintained. Because our mechanics live locally, their service fees are well within a community’s ability to pay, but they cannot take on a service agreement until a broken waterpoint has been fully restored. We fund the initial restoration of broken waterpoints, securing their long-term functionality and community access to safe water.
