Situation
Shivia works with marginalised and vulnerable rural communities in India who suffer from little or no income, food insecurity, poor health and lack of education and social inclusion. Despite huge progress in India in recent years, millions of people - particularly women and children - still live below the poverty line of just USD 2.15 per day and are beyond the reach of Government or NGO services. It's these people we aim to help through our three agricultural Livelihood Programmes.
Solution
Over the last 16 years we have developed programmes which enable poor and marginalised farmers to work their own way out of poverty by starting enterprises from home. We provide the business toolkits and training so they know how to start and run the enterprise on their own. With the funds they earn from selling their chickens, agricultural produce and fish, they typically meet basic household needs, reinvest in their enterprise or start a new enterprise altogether, such as tailoring or a shop.
