Situation
Inadequate menstrual health education and management is a barrier to girls fulfilling their learning potential in rural Nepal as they are ill equipped to deal with their basic hygiene needs. Social stigmas, a lack of education and poor sanitation are all factors. Unicef’s findings show that during menstruation many girls find it difficult to concentrate in class due to embarrassment, discomfort and fear of leakage, leading to absenteeism.
Solution
By helping to empower girls to reach their learning potential by facilitating a sustainable solution to menstrual health and its management. Specifically, by providing 1,500 re-usable, eco-friendly, menstrual health kits to girls across a network of 15 supported schools. Quality kits will be purchased from established local female sewers operating a ‘cottage style industry’ and distributed alongside ‘in school training’ on menstrual health and its management by CITC trained teachers.
