Situation
The UK has one of highest maternal death rates in Europe and has increased by 20% in recent years (excluding Covid-related deaths). Black women are almost four times more likely to die and Asian women twice as likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth than white women. Stillbirth rates for babies born to mothers from the most deprived areas have increased and Black babies have the highest rates of stillbirth and neonatal death.
Solution
Birthrights is the leading authority on the rights of women and birthing people during pregnancy and birth in the UK. The basic maternity rights of women and birthing people are under real and immediate threat. We use human right laws as a tool to both empower and prevent trauma against women and birthing people so they can access safe maternity care that fully respects their right to bodily autonomy, self-agency, free from discrimination coercion and violence.
