In the UK, artificial limbs are mostly discarded, contributing to a critical waste crisis. Meanwhile, in sub-Saharan Africa, 90% of amputees lack the access to mobility technologies due to high costs and a lack of specialised clinics. This lack of access results in increased risks of poverty, social exclusion, and educational dropout. Each of STAND project and interventions address increasing the opportunities for those living with limb-loss to access quality and appropriate healthcare.
We work with local communities and clinics to to sustainably strengthen health systems and improve access to high-quality rehabilitation care. We collect, donated high-quality prosthetic limbs from UK hospital partners for refurbishment and use by local clinics. We deploy mobile clinics into rural areas where specialised care is not reachable, we train prosthetists and care workers and we train and peer counsellors to provide psycho-social support to those living with the trauma of amputation.
