SWCC Hedgehog Hospital serves as a crucial facility for the treatment and rehabilitation of hedgehogs brought in by the public. Hedgehogs receive expert care from a dedicated team, before being released back into the wild. The Hospital opened in 2012 and has rescued over 6,000 hedgehogs to date.

Situation
The hedgehog, one of Britain’s best-loved wild mammals, is seriously endangered. Unless we take immediate action to conserve them, they are at risk of dying out in the UK. Every four years, around a fifth of the UK hedgehog population is wiped out. Numbers have declined dramatically from 30 million in the 1950s to just one million today. This is due to the destruction of their habitat by humans, the use of pesticides, road traffic deaths, and predation.
Solution
SWCC has been at the forefront of conservation since 2011, particularly focusing on the rescue, rehabilitation and release of vulnerable hedgehogs. We have admitted over 6000 hedgehogs, providing them with necessary medical treatment, rehabilitation, and a secure space for recovery before releasing them back into the wild. Our commitment to wildlife-friendly practices, education, and advocacy underscores our dedication to ensuring the well-being of hedgehogs and the broader goals of conservation
