65% of people in prison, and 15% in the community, can't read or struggle to. Even more struggle with numeracy. Shannon Trust is raising money to support people in the criminal justice system, and the wider community, to learn to read and improve their numeracy so they can transform their lives.

Situation
65% of people in prison, and 15% in the community, cannot read, or struggle to. Even more struggle with numeracy. People who are unable to read are more likely to live in inadequate, overcrowded housing, and experience poor physical and mental health. It means they have reduced access to education, training and rehabilitation programmes that could transform their lives and give them hope for a better future, outside of the criminal justice system.
Solution
We support people who have fallen through the cracks in formal education. We know a lot of people have had bad learning experiences in the past, so our learning programmes are designed to be different. They are peer-led, one-to-one, and there are no exams and no classrooms. Learning is tailored to suit individual needs. We know that learning to read can reduce re-offending, and provide improved future prospects, including employment and further education.
