We will distribute free re-useable menstrual health kits to female students in Conakry Guinea. We will run workshops for male and female students on sexual health and for the girls on how to care for the kits. We have set up a social enterprise that employs local women to sew the kits in Conakry.

Situation
The £10-£15 cost of buying menstrual pads each month means girls in Guinea miss school or are failing to complete their education post puberty. Those that can buy pads are often not able to deal hygienically with they periods or risk infection from sub-standard pad bought cheaply. There is shame and a loss of dignity associated with the inability to deal with menstruation that undermines girls confidence to succeed. Period poverty further increases increases an already unacceptable gender gap.
Solution
Building on a 2 year relationship with a large school in Conakry and 7 years of working with the Health Club at the school, we will run workshops for male and female students and female staff and family members, on sexual health and the importance of education for girls, before distributing free re-useable menstrual health kits. We will run workshops on how to care for the kits. We will source the kits from a social enterprise that we have set up employing local women to sew the kits in Conakry.
