Situation
Adults with learning disabilities face a very high risk of avoidable ill health linked to poor lifestyle choices, eg prevalence of diabetes is nearly double the rate of the general population. Many of the people we support do little or no exercise outside of Reach. But sedentary lifestyles are a key risk factor in poor health outcomes. Barriers to exercise include reliance on low incomes, inaccessible local facilities, lack of transport, low confidence, and fear of harassment in the community.
Solution
Led by a senior Manager, Project Workers will enhance opportunities for adults with learning disabilities (clients) to boost their activity levels by sustaining existing courses; introducing new courses responding to feedback eg dance, football, archery; addressing participation barriers through problem-solving, confidence-boosting & networking; introducing new fitness-related outings such as Seasonal Walks and Challenge days; building capacity to sustain fitness activities through training etc.
