Porridge Clubs in Kenya reduce school absence due to food poverty, so children have a better chance to gain skills, confidence and qualifications to improve their lives. If we hit our target, your donations will provide 150,000 mugs of nutritious porridge so children can attend school regularly.

Situation
In 2022, UNICEF reported 2.5 million children aged 6-17 in Kenya did not attend school, with only 53% of Kenyan children enrolling at secondary school. In Thika and Kiambu County, several low-paying industries including flower farms and tea plantations are prevalent. Food poverty leads directly to school absenteeism yet children who attend primary school regularly are more likely to enrol in secondary education, improving their chances to support themselves and their families into adulthood.
Solution
Porridge Clubs offer a tried & tested solution, running in 13 schools in and around the town of Thika, enabling 2,725 children to go to school every day instead of working, begging or scavenging for food. Through our Kenyan NGO partner, participating schools receive a basic kitchen including an eco-friendly cooker and cooking utensils. Schools employ a cook and receive vitamin-supplemented porridge so children enjoy a nutritious, daily porridge meal, to alleviate absence caused by food poverty.
