Situation
As HE’s work becomes recognised, the number of referrals is increasing exponentially. Cancer of the breast & cervix are common; therefore, women are disproportionately affected. HE needs a social worker and an additional nurse to provide homebased care and training for nurses and doctors across the country. HEUK supports the provision of homebased palliative care in Ethiopia by supporting HE, the only non- government organisation dedicated to providing specialist services for the sick and dying.
Solution
Having appointed the two new members of staff there will be an induction programme and subsequent mentoring aiming to have the new employees working in the community as quickly as possible. With additional staff fewer people will die in distress with uncontrolled symptoms often lacking basic drugs and care. There are competencies which new staff are expected to achieve as well as a probationary period of 45 days. All appointees will have the opportunity to undertake specialist training online.
