RTM is a grant-giving music charity that invests in the next generation, reaching them by providing vital funding to school music depts in some of the most deprived areas in the UK. Situation
The lack of funding for music education in schools depriving 1000s of young people of the chance to gain a skillset uniquely delivered through the tools involved in learning music. 42% of schools do not have GCSE music students & A level music has fallen by 45% since 2010; only 15% of state school students receive a sustained music education with a tiny minority playing in orchestras. Plus decrease in local authority contributions from £14.3million (2012/13) to £5.7million in 2017.
Solution
Restore the Music Capital Grant Programme : Tackling the problem of funding the resourcing of a school music department RTM offers £10,000 & £20,000 grant awards to primary & secondary schools for the purchase of musical instruments & equipment. It aims to redress the balance & in doing so simultaneously tackle low attendance,hard-to reach students,mental health issues, lack of social cohesion and cultural capital & deliver improved attainment across the wider curriculum.
