Less than 25% of girls in rural areas attend secondary school due to poverty. Families in remote subsistence farming communities prefer to send a son over a daughter to school. Factors such as fears of abduction, too far to walk, needing the female child to collect water and help run the home, early marriage or having no money to pay for rent near the high school conspire to keep girls out of education.

We have been working to help alleviate the barriers to education for girls for 19 years. Latrines in schools and water wells in communities mean more girls are now finishing primary school. They want to continue to secondary but there is only one High school. By providing a dedicated centre for girls tutoring, mentoring and life skills plus a scholarship for accommodation, girls can now safely complete their 4 years of high school education and be skilled for post school education or employment.
