Situation
These days, most people take for granted putting out the rubbish for recycling and having their bins emptied. But around the world, one person in three doesn’t have their rubbish collected, let alone recycled, mostly in the poorest communities of lower-income countries. People have no choice but to burn it, or dump it. Burning rubbish puts toxic smoke into the air; dumping pollutes the places people live, causing further health problems. Rivers and seas get clogged with plastic and filth.
Solution
With our natural resources in short supply, we have to do better at recycling waste back into productive use, encouraging the local circular economy. Whilst challenges to health and the environment are huge, 'thinking global and acting local' is how we change things. We support a growing network of green entrepreneurs turning reusable waste into new products and establishing green businesses. We work with communities to improve waste recycling, helping to clean peoples local environment.
