We are seeking to fund enhanced equipment for our neuromuscular gym (which is the only one of its kind in Europe) and exercise programmes specifically for young girls and women, who would otherwise not have the opportunity to exercise safely, to inspire body confidence as well as fitness.

Women and girls with neuromuscular conditions are acutely aware of their body image, with many having low confidence levels already. Changes to their physique owing to their disability only adds to their anxieties. Exercising is something many women in this target group are unable to do in mainstream gyms and exercise classes, but NMC can change this by providing female only exercise options as well as providing enhanced equipment. Of 258 female clients we see regularly, only 58 use our gym.

We will support our physiotherapy team to gain further qualifications in order to provide accessible exercise classes to women with neuromuscular conditions, which include seated sessions to ensure that all can take part. Delivered in a peer group, the proposed twice weekly women only exercise classes would enable women to come together and motivate one another to participate. We will also replace gym equipment with more functional, accessible equipment that more of our community can use.
