Last year, Samaritans volunteers responded to more than 3 million calls for help from people struggling to cope, with suicidal feelings expressed in almost 1 in 4 calls. This winter, our Break the Silence campaign lets people know that they don’t have to face difficult times alone.

Suicide rates are the highest they’ve been for 20 years - it's the biggest killer of men under 50 and of people of all genders under 35. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy that impacts families, friends, and entire communities. It is estimated that for every life lost to suicide 135 people could be affected. We can all play a part in ending the stigma around suicide. Staying silent costs lives and prevents those struggling from reaching out to get the support they need.

We know that talking can save lives. And right now, someone is reaching out to Samaritans for help. Our helpline is open 24/7, with dedicated volunteers ready to listen —without judgment or pressure, day or night. For those who don’t feel able to have these conversations with friends or family, Samaritans offers a lifeline, a safe space to open up about difficult feelings. This winter will be as hard as ever but with your help we can encourage more people to break the silence and support them.
