The illegal wildlife pet trade (IWT) is decimating wild cheetah populations in the Horn of Africa. Innocent cheetah cubs are snatched from their mothers, sold as pets and deprived of a life in the wild. CCF is working to halt this trade and care for the fortunate cubs that are rescued from it.

In the past few years, an estimated 300 cheetah cubs per year are taken from the Horn of Africa, through Somaliland, to be illegally sold as pets in the Middle East. Sadly, most cubs do not survive the journey. They are malnourished and dehydrated and of every four cubs stolen, up to three die in transit. Of those that do survive and make it into the trade, most will not live for more than two years. There are less than 500 cheetahs in this region and they are at real risk of local extinction.

As part of our mission to build a more compassionate world for wild cheetahs, we are working tirelessly to mitigate the threats of IWT and give the rescued cheetahs a second chance at life. We will do this by working with Somaliland's Ministry of Environment & Climate Change (MoECC) to rescue cubs, change laws, build community support, train farmers and wildlife observers, and provide safe spaces for rescued cheetahs. We will also map cheetah populations and points of capture in Somaliland.
