We are raising funds to help people who are in the UK as refugees and asylum seekers to gain skills and qualifications to make a new life for themselves and put their skills to good use in this country. This will benefit the individuals and give them a purpose to their life and will benefit society.

Situation
Many refugees/asylum seekers are desperate to use their skills, but need education, training and qualifications to adapt to life in the UK and UK job requirements. Some need to improve their English language skills to play an active role in society and progress to further education and work. Others seek more practical or vocational courses. People often need financial assistance to pass exams to be able to practise in the UK. Educational support also helps with mental health.
Solution
We would award funds to applicants, in the UK as refugees/asylum seekers for courses, e.g.ESOL, interpreting, security, accounting, law, health and social care. We would fund applications for IELTS exams, PLAB exams and for licenses needed for work e.g. as electricians. Our grants process is rigorous. All awards from the five grants meetings a year depend on the applicant making an excellent case to show financial hardship and providing good refererences. We still have to make difficult choices.
