In 2025, POW Thanet will celebrate 10 years of International Women’s Day Festivals with a bold and proactive anniversary programme of arts and culture. Inspired by the past, present and future of gender equality, we are kicking off with a focus on combating ageism and social isolation.

Situation
In Thanet, residents experience high levels of loneliness and social isolation. 18 areas in Thanet are amongst the top 10% most deprived in England and digital poverty is very high. With a large elderly population (30% are aged 60+ years), they also experience ageism. Demand is outstripping supply with NHS and Social Care statutory services and there has been a sharp increase in pensioner poverty. Thanet women live 10.2 years less than the UK average.
Solution
Creativity improves wellbeing through preventative medical care, reducing need for medication, GP appointments and hospital admissions, improve healthy eating & inspire an increase in physical activity. POW Thanet makes art accessible to all through encouragement, facilitation and opportunities, providing new experiences, raising aspirations, shifting power to the collective & inspiring change in our local area and beyond by and for women & girls
