Home-Start Herts (HSH) provides early intervention support to vulnerable families, so that parents can offer children the best start in life. Families in Hertfordshire are struggling more than ever and need support before they breakdown and their children's wellbeing suffers.

Situation
Last year, HSH engaged with 376 families; we turned away 85 due to a lack of funding. Families felt isolated (78%), had poor mental health (69%) and low self-esteem (68%). Families are referred to HSH with an average of 4-5 struggles which are affecting their family and having a detrimental effect of their children's wellbeing. Increasingly, these challenges are more complex and families require support for longer. Early intervention support is needed before they reach a crisis.
Solution
HSH builds stronger, sustainable family units so parents can give their children the best start. Through 1:1 home visiting, trained and skilled Volunteer Family Mentors offer emotional and practical support, for 2-3 hours each week, for up to 9 months (on average). We also have 8 family groups, offering families a safe, non-judgemental space to receive support and integrate into the local community. Parents build confidence, learn coping strategies, bond with their children and build networks.
