A Maternity and Infant Health unit to increase capacity and improve the care of mothers and babies at the rural Chisamba Health Centre, which supports around 33,000 people. The Centre currently struggles to cope with over 60 live births per month, which is placing maternal and infant lives at risk.

Lives are being put at risk by inadequate maternity facilities at the health centre in rural Chisamba, which is a vital resource for over 33,000 people and cares for around 720 pregnant women a year. The single delivery room means births may take place outside with little privacy, and with no maternity ward new mothers are placed on a general ward, increasing the risk of infection. The lack of space means many women delay seeking care, leading to dangerous and potentially fatal complications.

We are building a dedicated Maternity and Infant Health unit. The bespoke facility will transform maternity care for this community, providing pre- and post-natal rooms, an expanded delivery room and dedicated bathrooms and laundry to improve hygiene. It will increase capacity to enable up to 80 deliveries per month, significantly reducing the risks to mothers and babies. There will also be an under-5s clinic for follow up care and vaccinations, positively influencing child development.
