Person-centred care is essential during pregnancy and birth. But inadequate interpreting can make it impossible for those facing language barriers to actively participate in their care, express any concerns, and make informed decisions, raising the risk of negative birth experiences for both mothers and babies. We’re determined to help break these barriers so that every parent we walk alongside receives the crucial language support they deserve during pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood.
Solution
In 2023/24, Amma's clients came from 50 countries and spoke 34 languages - 42% spoke basic or no English. We're dedicated to offering multilingual support to our clients and calling for more inclusive maternity care. This includes: Professional interpreting during 1:1 client interactions & group activities Translated materials like our 'Parent Guide' into multiple languages Matching clients with volunteers who speak the same language Advocacy & research to enhance NHS interpreting services
