1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. For mothers and their children, economic abuse is often the first form of domestic abuse experienced. SWA helps women to disentangle themselves from economic abuse by advocating for long lasting changes to policy and practice. Areas of work: We educate public and private bodies who respond to survivors to reduce survivor trauma and increase their safety. We raise the profile of domestic abuse nationally and internationally so that domestic abuse is treated like the critical threat to human rights that it is. We influence policy by working with government, police, courts, and child welfare systems. We run Scotland’s 24-Hour Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage Helpline to ensure help is always available. Actively support a network of 33 specialist local Women’s Aid groups that directly assist the women and children of Scotland affected by domestic abuse.

Economic abuse impacts 1 in 5 women in the UK (Surviving Economic Abuse, 2024) and can have lifelong consequences. It may include restricting access to bank accounts, building up debt in the survivor’s name without their consent or preventing them from working or accessing education. It’s not just about money – it’s about control and deprivation of resources and opportunities. We believe that freedom from abuse shouldn’t cost your home, your income, your education, your savings or your future.

We need to fundamentally elevate the issue of economic abuse across Scotland, so that victim-survivors can identify their situation and receive appropriate support. This requires frontline services, financial institutions, the justice system and government to recognise economic abuse and respond in a way that puts the needs and rights of those who have experienced abuse at the forefront.
