Latest estimates indicate that around 2.5 million children in Uganda are orphans. For those without family members they can turn to, many live as part of a child-headed household, making them acutely vulnerable. In areas of extreme poverty, they are disproportionately affected by issues such as child labour and early marriage. No matter their age, the eldest child bears the responsibility of being the sole provider and caregiver to their household. With no safety net it is a struggle to survive.

We will support 20 households made up of around 80 children to train with our Child Headed Households Programme for one year, kickstarting a journey towards a safe and sustainable future. With our partner ACET Mbale, we will teach the eldest child skills they can use for years to come, such as how to run a small business and access food and income security through a food garden and livestock project. We will also train a guardian in their community to provide vital mentorship and protection.
