We Are Family is a peer support community by adopters, for adopters. Navigating the education system can present adoptive families with complex challenges. This year we aim to create a set of resources, including webinars, podcasts and blogs, to help our members support their children’s education.

Education is complex for all children, but the early life trauma of adopted children, and the subsequent need for trauma-responsive education, makes our existing system harder to navigate. A lack of post-adoption support means parents are often left to fight for their child’s education needs alone which can lead to poor mental health and, in some cases, adoption breakdown. Without appropriate support, an adoptive child’s education, and consequently their later life, can be negatively impacted.

Our membership is free and includes access to our peer support groups, providing opportunity for connection, digital programmes and space to advocate for change through our Amplifying Voices programme. We plan to create education-focused content for members at different stages of the adoption journey across multiple platforms, making it accessible to as many adoptive parents as possible. Current content ideas include education advocacy, school transitions and understanding cultural heritage.
