Situation
The community of 1600 collect water from a contaminated, unstable shallow well a kilometre away, increasing incidence of contracting waterborne diseases. The community sanitation situation is poor as most only have traditional pit latrines or nothing at all. Attendance at school is irregular due to ill health and lack of sanitation at school. Girls are especially affected by the lack of appropriate facilities, particularly when menstruating. Children, often girls, spend time collecting water.
Solution
Water for Kids embraces a holistic approach in the prevention of waterborne diseases and the spread of diseases by: 1. Providing Safe Water - We will drill a borehole and water will be pumped by hand pumps and accessed at standpipes. We will provide the school with water tanks. 2. Sanitation - We will provide the materials and training for households to build their own sanplats and renovate latrines and a girls washroom at the school. 3. Hygiene & Handwashing - Training to school and community
