Situation
In Gaza, acute malnutrition among children under the age of two is alarmingly high, with approximately 31% in northern Gaza and 10% in Rafah, southern Gaza, suffering from this condition. Over 50,000 children are estimated to be acutely malnourished, and 1,125 children have been hospitalised for the treatment of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) (April 30, UNICEF). The healthcare infrastructure is severely compromised, with 71% (63 out of 89) of primary health care centres not functional.
Solution
MAP has strong experience working with other organisations and supporting essential health services in Gaza. For this project we will work with an existing local partner, Ard El Insan, experienced in nutrition programming. It will follow a phased approach in immediately providing emergency nutrition and community health programming and scaling up as the context allows. We will address severe/moderate acute malnutrition through frontline screening, emergency stabilisation points and awareness.
