Situation
High unemployment in rural Kenya and unsustainable agriculture, due to climate change, has pushed women into further poverty. With more men moving away to look for work, women-led households have become the norm, making it imperative to enable women to earn extra income to support their families. In addition to unemployment and poverty, adult illiteracy, particularly among women, is another layer of disenfranchisement they face, exacerbating the endemic and oppressive societal norms women face.
Solution
Lack of skills and access to sustainable livelihoods creates a cycle of financial dependence. Therefore the Nasio Trust will conduct an entrepreneurship and development training programme for over 200 rural women. The programme will focus on capacity building, life skills such basic literacy and numeracy, as well as training in income-generating ventures such as soap making, goat farming, indigenous vegetable farming and encouraged to start their own small micro-businesses.
