Since COVID, cases of isolation and loneliness have risen exponentially. We already know that the elderly are at risk of loneliness, with 51% of all people aged 75 and over living alone, and two-fifths of all older people (about 3.9 million) stating that the television is their main source of company. However, cases of loneliness and depression amongst younger people are also growing at an alarming rate, with 16 to 24 years now reportedly feeling lonely more often than those in older age groups.
Barrel Organ’s participation projects, such as Campfire and Town Squared, have been deliberately devised to help tackle this epidemic in loneliness; working to foster community cohesion and provide inclusive spaces that promote connection. Some comments from participants were: “This is a great initiative and can potentially help in building the community in a fast-growing town” & “This is a brilliant group. We need more opportunities as adults to get together and use creativity and playfulness"
