Situation
It takes great courage to speak out against wrongdoing. Every day, ordinary people – activists, journalists, lawyers, and Indigenous communities – stand up against environmental devastation caused by businesses and governments around the world. Together, defenders form a vital line of defense against the climate crisis. But this work comes at a heavy and often fatal cost. Since we began documenting attacks on defenders, over 2,000 have been killed for peacefully protecting their environment.
Solution
We uncover evidence and shine a light on global trends in attacks against land and environmental defenders. We expose the forces and enablers behind this violence, advocate for stronger protections of defender’s rights, and use our platform to amplify their voices. By engaging global decision-makers with our research, we aim to stop attacks, address their underlying causes, and expose complicit governments and companies.
